2026 Pro Bono Coordinators Retreat
Tuesday September 1, 2026 3:45pm - 4:45pm PDT
Every legal aid pro bono program depends on the same resource: willing volunteer attorneys. What actually motivates volunteers to say “yes,” stick with a case, and come back for another? Drawing on survey data gathered from pro bono volunteers who worked with more than a dozen legal aid providers nationwide, we’ll highlight the recurring patterns behind volunteer engagement. We'll explore the motivators driving attorney volunteerism, the barriers that consistently impede volunteerism, and the specific kinds of supports that turn one-time volunteers into repeat partners.

We'll also draw on five recent pro bono program assessments, conducted for legal aid organizations nationwide, to identify management challenges—like case-routing bottlenecks, fragmented case tracking systems, and inconsistent practices among field offices—that may impact both the volunteers’ experience and the program’s impact for clients.

Whether you manage pro bono placements from inside a legal aid organization or coordinate pro bono programs from within a law firm, this session offers data-informed ideas about what makes pro bono partnerships work.
